Language and Hearing Development from the Inspire the Senses Developmental Playmat

This month, we have discussed the many benefits of the amazing, stupendous, terrific Inspire the Senses Developmental Playmat by Sassy. We’ve reviewed its safety, portability and ease as well as the developmental attributes. In this posting, we’re going to focus on using the playmat to foster your little one’s language and hearing development!

In infancy, listening to sounds and voices is critical for strong language development. Here are my four favorite sound features on the Inspire the Senses Developmental Playmat by Sassy:

Clackers: No, we’re not quackers – there really are clackers! The playmat has clackers your little one can shake and move to create sound.Your baby will turn to find the source of the sound, which helps to develop important sound location skills.

Bird Chime and Bug Rattle: Please take the time to use the chime! You can gently shake the bird chime and the bug rattle to cause rattle noises. Your baby will learn to differentiate the noises.

Song Bird: Yes, yes, yes we all already know about One Sassy Doctor’s singing, so let’s move on – I am no song bird. However, the playmat has one! Pressing the center of this tweetie cutie bird will play a lovely tune. Your little one will learn sound differentiation and location skills, as well as begin to recognize melodies.

While you are using the playmat, there are endless ways to continue to foster language development:

Talk to your baby: Take every opportunity you can to talk to your baby. Ask questions, make statements, coo, and laugh. Just because he does not answer does not mean he is not listening.

Sing to your baby: From birth, babies start to recognize their mom and dad’s voices. They love to hear calming noises, so belt it out around your baby! You do not have to sound like Streisand to have fun. Singing with your baby is one of the best ways to bond with him.

Next post, we’ll spend some more time talking about tummy time. In the meantime, start rocking and rolling with your little one.
